Fantasy Sonata for Flute and Piano by John Carmichael edited by Roger Armstrong. Southern Music Co., 2005, SS, 32 + 8 pages. Carmichael (born 1930) is an Australian composer who settled in Britain in 1954. The composer wrote: ". . . in the first movement, there are two main themes: the first, a short motif, is stated at the very opening: the second theme is more lyrical, with a characteristic falling interval of a minor sixth. These two motifs appear and reappear in different guises until the they quietly confront each other, unaccompanied, just before the recapitulation. . . In the slow movement, the piano with its rising motif constantly threatens to overwhelm the flute, but it is the latter's persuasive eloquence which finally wins the day in a hushed conclusion. The last movement has a play of different moods, ranging from jauntiness to mock innocence. A short cadenza for the flute leads to a race between the flute and piano to be first at the double bar." For advanced performers.
