A Christmas Jazz Portrait for clarinet choir arranged by Lennie Niehaus. Kendor Music, 2000, includes score and parts. The basic instrumentation is for 3 B-flat clarinets, alto clarinet and bass clarinet (and or B-flat contra clarinet). There are optional parts for E-flat clarinet and E-flat contra alto clarinet. Since there are only 5 separate parts this arrangement could be played by a clarinet quintet. This set of carols is written in contrasting jazz styles. It features Up On The Housetop (swing), Lo, How A Rose E'er Blooming (ballad), Patapan (jazz waltz), and Ding! Dong! Merrily On High (swing). All the hallmarks of a Niehaus arrangement are present -- modern chords, melodies for all, solid ensemble work, etc. The publisher rates it as (US) grade 3 but the two swing pieces are more difficult than that. Total duration of 9:45. (C2183)
