Clarinet Concerto Clarinet and Piano by Philip Sparke

Clarinet Concerto Clarinet and Piano by Philip Sparke. Anglo Music, 2004, SS, 34 + 8 pages. This piece was commissioned by Linda Merrick who had some input to the composition. Philip Sparke (1951-) is a contemporary British composer who studied composition, trumpet and piano at the Royal College of Music. The opening movement contains much syncopation and is almost rag-like in style. The slower second movement initially explores the chalumeau register of the clarinet in a theme that is later taken up by the band while the soloist weaves a filigree descant. This leads straight into the third movement, which is almost bee-bop in style and shows off the jazzier side of the clarinet. College level. (There is a concert band accompaniment available that probably can be played by a good high school band.) (C0835)
