Concertino for Clarinet and Piano by Jeanine Rueff

Concertino for Clarinet and Piano by Jeanine Rueff. Alphonse Leduc, 1950, SS, 12 + 6 pages. Jeanine Rueff (1922-1999) was a French composer and a professor at the National Superior Conservatory of Music in Paris (this was the concours piece in 1950). This piece is in one movement with three major sections: Allegro (3/4), Adagio (4/4) and Allegro (2/4). Prof. Heim says this is an excellent example of mid-twentieth century French writing for clarinet and as an outstanding work in the concertino repertoire for advanced performers. It is a virtuoso work for clarinet, emphasizing the melodic techniques that display the best qualities of the instrument. The texture alternates between a two-three part linear style to a harmonic approach where many chords are built in fourths, and added tones provide an additional dissonant flavor. The melodic writing encompasses many skips of fourths and wider intervals which are contrasted with chordal arpeggios and modal scales. There is a major cadenza near the end of the Adagio. Duration about 8 minutes. Orchestral parts are available as a rental. (C1199)
