Die Kunst der Klarinette Variations on "Colonel Bogey" for three clarinets and bass clarinet by Ian Holloway

Die Kunst der Klarinette Variations on "Colonel Bogey" for three clarinets and bass clarinet by Ian Holloway. Ian Holloway Music, 2001, SS, (includes parts and score). This is a wonderful clarinet quartet by British born clarinetist and composer Holloway who has lived in South Africa for more than 25 years. This piece was written in 1975 and was recorded by the Thurston Clarinet Quartet in 1995. It begins with an Introduction (and statement of the theme) followed by five very distinct variations: Serenade, Sequence I, Fugue, Tango, and Rondo. There are quotations from clarinet works from Mozart and Weber and the final Rondo is clearly inspired by the last movement of the Gran Partita. Successfully performing this work in public will require a very good college or adult amateur quartet but groups not at this level will find enjoyment in playing it for themselves. A low C bass clarinet can be used but is not necessary. Duration 14+ minutes. (C0921)
