The Thomaskantor is the musical director of the Thomanerchor in Leipzig, founded in 1212. He is appointed by Leipzig's city council and his duties are to lead the weekly services called Motette, Sunday services and other services in the Thomaskirche. Johann Sebastian Bach was the most famous Thomaskantor, he served from 1723 to 1750. The composer writes that the music of Bach inspired him to compose this piece. It begins with a brief Adagio which is followed by Allegro assai (mm = 140). The clarinet parts alternate playing the melody and occasionally play it in harmony. The bass clarinet part is primarily rhythmic accompaniment. (C2388)
