Quartett by Paul Hindemith. Schott, 1939, SS. Written in 1938, Hindemith's Quartett for clarinet, violin, violoncello and piano had its first performancein New York City in 1939 with Victor Polatschek as clarinetist. It is in three long movements: Mässig bewegt, Sehr langsam, and Mässig bewegt. The second movement has intricate rhythms while the third movement is extended, with several sections and tempo changes. The instrumental parts are musically demanding, and the piano part is especially difficult. (C0630)
