Schattenklänge, Three Pieces for Bass Clarinet by Mauricio Kagel

Schattenklänge, Three Pieces for Bass Clarinet by Mauricio Kagel. Henry Litolff's Verlag/C.F. Peters, 1997, SS, 13 pages. The title of this piece can be literally translated as "Shade sounds" although "Shadow sounds" may be closer to the intended meaning. Kagel was interested in the theatrical side of music performance and this piece is an example. While it may be performed in a normal manner, the composer has provided directions for performing it behind a screen with five spotlights which produce various shadow effects on the screen as the performer moves around. The music includes complete instructions and some photos of the results. There is more information on the performance of this piece in Harry Sparnaay's book, The Bass Clarinet. An advanced work requiring an extended range instrument with a duration of 11 minutes. (C1722)
