The title of this piece can be literally translated as "Shade sounds" although "Shadow sounds" may be closer to the intended meaning. Kagel was interested in the theatrical side of music performance and this piece is an example. While it may be performed in a normal manner, the composer has provided directions for performing it behind a screen with five spotlights which produce various shadow effects on the screen as the performer moves around.
