Sonata for clarinet and piano by William Alwyn

Sonata for clarinet and piano by William Alwyn. Boosey & Hawkes, 1963, SS, 25 + 7 pages. William Alwyn (1905-1985) was an English composer who studied at the Royal Academy where he later joined the faculty. He composed symphonies, oratorios and concertos, but was most successful as a composer for films. This sonata is a multi-sectional work in one movement (duration 12:00). Prof. Heim has written that the style is highly romantic, but dissonance is used for emphasis. While writing for clarinet is lyric; there are also periods of technical flourish and climax. The work requires great breath endurance and excellent finger dexterity and is suggested for mature performers. (C1723)
