Sonata for Clarinet Op. 50 by Alun Hoddinott

Sonata for Clarinet Op. 50 by Alun Hoddinott. Oxford University Press/Allegro Music, 1968, SS, 24 + 7. The first performance was given by Keith Puddy in 1967. It is in three movements: 1. Cadenza (Allegro brioso), 2. Aria (Adagio) and 3. Moto Perpetuo (Presto). Prof. Heim had the following observations: the clarinet and piano participate in dialogue in the Cadenza movement, many jazz inflections in the melodic material, the chordal material is often dissonant, rhythmic material is intricate but logical, and he concluded that this is an excellent piece for advanced performers; seldom played outside England. Duration about 11 minutes. (C1339)
