Spotlights on the Bass Clarinet (Bassclarinet) for Bass Clarinet and Piano by Jan Haderman

Spotlights on the Bass Clarinet (Bassclarinet) for Bass Clarinet and Piano by Jan Haderman. De Haske, 1992, 25 + 9 pages. Jan Haderman (1952-) is a Belgian composer best known for his works for winds. This three movement piece requires a low C bass clarinet. It was the first piece featured in William Hayter's article Bass Clarinet Solos for Students (The Clarinet, Vol. 41, No. 4, September 2014). Each movement is sectional or has changes in tempo. The first two movements are reminiscent of the fast and slow movements of classical and romantic concertos. The third movement includes a jazz waltz, a cadenza, a blues, and another waltz. Hayter suggests a single movement be chosen for study by a high school student but I believe it will take a college level performer to prepare the entire work for performance in a reasonable amount of time.
