Thracian Sketches for Solo Clarinet in B-flat by Derek Bermel. PeerMusic, 2007, 8 pages. This piece grew out of the composer's studies of the Thracian folk music of Bulgaria in 2001. In begins in the lower register of the clarinet at a tempo of mm=92 and accelerates in stages and slowly ascends to the high altissimo (A-flat). The last marked tempo is mm=240 before a final section to be played as fast as possible. While the first two thirds of the piece is in 5/8, the last three pages have variety of other meters including 6/8, 7/8, 9/7, 10/8, and 11/8. Advanced with a duration of about 8 minutes. (C1750)
