Two Antipodean Sketches for clarinet and piano by James Rae

Two Antipodean Sketches for clarinet and piano by James Rae. Universal Edition, 2017, SS. 20 + 6 pages. Written for a master clarinetist "down under," Rae's concert work Two Antipodean Sketches are two movements of opposite sounds. Cloudy Bay begins the work in a dreamy, reflective fashion, evoking the calm beauty of the titular New Zealand region that gives us sauvignon blanc. Beatin' about the Bush! is a quick humorous exposition in 3/8 time, to feature the musician's dexterity and technique. Better high school clarinetists and above. (C2532)
