While it follows the original closely there are places where the composer has added original material to the Tchaikovsky work. The variations follow some of the movements of the ballet and include: Ouverture, Marche, Tarentelle, Danse de la fée-dragée (Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy), Trepak and Coda.
