Variations Op. 36 for Clarinet and Orchestra (Piano Reduction) by Conradin Kreutzer edited by John Newhill. Breitkopf & Härtel, 2003, SS, 18 + 6 pages. Conradin Kreutzer (1780-1849) was a German composer and conductor who also played clarinet and piano. Kreutzer wrote a number of clarinet works for his own very virtuoso use, such as the Variations Op. 36. In the work's original setting, the solo instrument is accompanied by a (string) orchestra. As a conductor in Stuttgart, Donaueschingen and Vienna, Kreutzer was able to draw on a number of good ensembles for his performances. Since there was no edition for clarinet and piano, John hill has come to the aid of performers by remedying this omission. This work begins with a Maestoso, followed by the theme (Allegretto), and four variations. (C2619)
