Clarinet Solitude by Joji Yuasa. Schott Japan, 1983, SS, 6 pages. Joji Yuasa (1929-) is a Japanese composer of contemporary classical music who has lived and taught in the United States since 1981. This piece as written in 1980 for the memorial concerto for Yoshiro Irino, a pioneer of contemporary music in Japan. The beginning motif is based on a twelve-tone series associated with Irino. In the latter half of the piece the contrary motion of the beginning theme appears in a bass part. This piece includes a number of extended techniques including multiphonics (with fingerings for French and German clarinets), special trills, fractional tones, etc. An advanced work with a duration of about 8:20.
