Concertino for Clarinet and Strings arranged for Clarinet and Piano by Matyas Seiber. Schott, 1953, SS, 42 + 8 pages. Five movements: Toccata (Allegro), Variaziani Semplici (Andante), Scherzo (Allegro), Recitative (Rubato), and Finale (Allegro). Dr Heim wrote, "The music's tonality shifts quietly at times, and there are hints of the use of serial techniques. There is a musical approach to the dissonance, which employs added tones, complex seventh chords and use of polytonality. The treatment of rhythm gives an interesting forward motion to the music. Melodic material is characterized by scales that have modal tendencies, and features skips of fourths and fifths. The clarinet part is very musical and, at times, is technically challenging. There is a general conservative treatment of range other than a few altissimo a and a-flats. This is one of the most musical of the concertino genre, but with its good twentieth-century style it will appeal to advanced performers." (C1028)
