Concerto for Clarinet and String Orchestra (Piano Reduction) by Halsey Stevens

Concerto for Clarinet and String Orchestra (Piano Reduction) by Halsey Stevens. Peermusic, 1971, SS, 24 + 8 pages. Commissioned by friends and students of Lee Gibson, it has three movements: Andante non troppo-Allegro (3/4), Quasi Adagio (9/8) and Allegro moderato (2/4). There is a cadenza in the second movement. Prof. Heim wrote that the fast movements have rhythmic drive; the style is tonal and harmonies are fairly conservative. This work is written with great sensitivity for the clarinet although the clarinet is more a part of the ensemble than a solo instrument. This is a very nice addition to the repertoire for advanced players but the work sounds best with the string accompaniment. (C1494)
