Concerto for Clarinet for Clarinet and Piano by Richard H. Walthew edited by Jane Ellsworth. Tecchler Press, 1994, SS, 33 + 15 pages. Richard H. Walthew (1872-1951) was and English composer, pianist, teacher and conductor. He wrote operettas, cantatas, chamber music, songs, vocal quartets with piano and several clarinet works. This concerto was completed in 1902 but was apparently never orchestrated and was first performed in 1991. It is in three movements performed segue: Allegro non troppo e con bravura (4/4), Commodo (4/4) and Vivace (2/2). An extended cadenza appears in the first movement. Prof. Heim wrote that the work is written in the style of the late Romantic period and is dramatic, inspired by interesting rhythms. He found the harmonic material is interesting, and the changes of key are, at times, surprising. Melodic material is usually approached by step, but often it involves various skips. The piano part is quite pianistic and, although it is an accompaniment, the part often has its own character. He concluded that this is good music written for the advanced clarinetist, and the work warrants performances on professional recitals. (C0888)
