For Hope for Bass Clarinet and Piano by Catherine McMichael (solo part edited by William King)

For Hope for Bass Clarinet and Piano by Catherine McMichael (solo part edited by William King). Alry Publications, 2012, SS, 14 + 5 pages. Catherine McMichael (1954-) is an American pianist, arranger, teacher and composer. This is a one movement sectional piece. It is divided into three main sections: driving and aggressive in a minor tonality with changing meters, then melodic and soaring in a sweeping 6/4 meter, and a return to the fast first themes, with emphasis on major tonality. The pulse in the outer sections is strong and focused, while the rhythmic writing in the middle section is intended to convey a sense of improvisation and freedom. The tempo and mixed meter make this a college level piece. There is one optional note in the extended range. A great new, original composition for the growing bass clarinet repertoire. (C2223)
