The instrumentation for this quartet is E-flat clarinet/B-flat clarinet, B-flat clarinet, basset horn, and bass clarinet. The bassethorn part could be transposed for B-flat clarinet or alto clarinet. The bass clarinet part is for the low E-flat version. The Thomaskantor is the musical director of the Thomanerchor in Leipzig, founded in 1212. He is appointed by Leipzig's city council and his duties are to lead the weekly services called Motette, Sunday services and other services in the Thomaskirche. Johann Sebastian Bach was the most famous Thomaskantor, he served from 1723 to 1750. The composer writes that the music of Bach inspired him to compose this piece. It begins with a brief Lento (B-flat clarinet solo, 2nd part) then the rest of the piece is Allegro assai. (C2730)
