Night of Stars for Clarinet and Piano by Jeff Smallman

Night of Stars for Clarinet and Piano by Jeff Smallman. Eighth Note Publications, 2001, SS, 4 + 1 pages. Night of Stars (in translation Nuits D'Étoiles), is an adaptation of a work for soprano and piano. The piece is a setting of a poem of the same name by Théodore de Banville. From the start, the listener is treated to melody and lush harmonies reminiscent of the French Impressionist era which conjure up images of melancholy summer evenings. This is an easy piece probably suitable near the end of the second year of study for recital or festival use. The clarinet part is almost entirely within the staff and in the key of C minor. The duration is about 3:35. (C2349)
