Paraphrasing the composer: This work was written in 1995, specifically for the for the French clarinetist Lucien Aubert. The work was the my attempt to express something of what I have felt as I wandered amidst the beautiful, grand and ancient forms of Europe. Similarly, imagine how the Sonata-Allegro from looks! How is an American of my sensibilities to respond to such grand structures. You can find the answer to that question in the first movement. In the other movements, I do my best to come to terms with other classical forms--specifically the scherzo, the toccata, and the Hungarian Dance. The results a piece of music that "sounds" American even while it lovingly and respectively evokes the great musical forms of Europe. They loved it in Paris! Duration 25 minutes. (C1972)
