Sonata for Clarinet and Piano by Aaron Copland

Sonata for Clarinet and Piano by Aaron Copland. Boosey & Hawkes, 1988, SS, 32 + 12 pages. Transcribed by the composer from his Sonata for Violin and Piano (1943). The clarinet part was edited by Timothy Paradise. In three movements: Andante semplice, Lento, and Allegretto giusto. Prof. Norman Heim wrote: The style is typical of Copland at the time of Appalachian Spring and has similarities with the Concerto for clarinet. There is some use of polytonality and minimal dissonance with a score has a lean texture that contrasts with full sonorities. The clarinet part is not adventuresome but extends in range to the middle of altissimo register. Musically, the work requires advanced performers with the piano accompaniment, perhaps, more demanding than clarinet part. This transcription is excellent music by one of the outstanding composers of the twentieth century. (C0616)
