Alec Wilder (1907-1980) was an American who composed for theater, radio, films and various Hollywood personalities including Benny Goodman. He composed short operas, chamber music, works for orchestra and many songs. This piece was written for Glenn Bowen and first performed in Rochester, New York in February 1965. It is in four movements: Allegro moderato, Andante, Grazioso, and Allegro con fuoco. Glen Bowen described it as having a wonderful diversity of expressive melody, skillful counterpoint and rich harmony-all combined with a delightful wit and sincerity. Norman Heim noted that the style incorporates a pop or jazz flavor and that it is an excellent recital piece that will challenge good college level clarinetists and provide program material for professionals.
