Sonata in G Minor for Clarinet and Piano by Georg Philipp Telemann arranged by Eli Heifetz. Or-Tav Music Publications, 1995, SS, 8 + 4 pages. Since few Baroque composers wrote for clarinet, arrangements of these works make it possible for clarinetists to play music of this era. Telemann was a contemporary of Bach and Handel and died when Mozart was 11. Most of his two hundred sonatas have four movements in a slow-fast-slow-format as does this arrangement. The first movement is based on a Sicilian dance. The second movement is faster. The clarinetist has the opportunity to demonstrate expression in the third movement and technical facility in the vigorous fourth movement. The publisher has rated this piece at grade 3 (US) but it is certainly on the upper end if not grade 4. (C2599)
