Sonate Op. 78 for Clarinet in B-flat and Piano by Marcel Mihalovici

Sonate Op. 78 for Clarinet in B-flat and Piano by Marcel Mihalovici. Heugel, 1959, SS, 37 + 10 pages. Marcel Mihalovici (1898-1985) was a Romania born French composer. Discovered by George Enescu in Bucharest, he moved to Paris in 1919 to study under Vincent d'Indy. This piece is dedicated to Louis Cahuzac and has three movements: I. Allegro serioso (6/8), II. Lento (4/4), and III. Allegro giocoso (2/4). Has a strong sense of tonality and controlled dissonance. The writing for both instruments is superb, with a chamber music equality of parts. The range of the clarinet part is moderate; the major challenge is rhythmic dialogue with the piano. Duration about 16 minutes. (C1193)
