Sonatina for Clarinet and Piano by James Walker

Sonatina for Clarinet and Piano by James Walker. G. Schirmer, 1974, SS, 11 + 3 pages. James Walker (1929-2002) was a British composer and pianist who played other instruments (including the clarinet during his military service). This piece was written in 1953 and is dedicated to Jack Brymer. It is in three movements: 1. Allegro moderato semplice, 2. Andante Mesto, and 3. Allegro. It is suitable for the progressing high school clarinetist but does present several challenges including some mixed meter in the second movement and an altissimo A in the third. "This is an unusual work, full of the wit, charm and texture necessary to attract players of all standards, especially the younger ones." (C0818)
