Spiegel im Spiegel for Clarinet (or Bass Clarinet) and Piano by Arvo Pärt. Universal Edition, 1978, SS 8 + 1 pages (includes part for either B-flat or C clarinet). This piece was written by Estonian composer Arvo Pärt in 1978, originally for violin and piano. The piece is in the tintinnabular style created by Pärt in which the "tintinnabular voice" (the piano) arpeggiates the tonic triad and the second voice (clarinet) moves diatonically in stepwise motion. The title means mirror in the mirror. The piece is musically minimal, yet produces a serene tranquility. The clarinet part is very easy (it looks like an ensemble warm up exercise) and the main issue in the piano part is concentration. It is about ten minutes long. Here is a version with clarinet on YouTube and another with a slower tempo. Both of these have dynamics (there aren't any in the music). (C1711)
