The Dreams and Prayers of Isaac the Blind for Clarinet and String Quartet by Osvaldo Golijov. Boosey & Hawkes, 2000, SB/SS, includes score and parts. This piece was originally written for Giora Feidman and first performed in 1994. Issac the Blind was, about 800 years ago, the greatest Kabbalist rabbi of Provence. After the composer completed this work he realized that the three movements (Prelude, II, and III. K'vakarat) represent the three languages spoken in 6,000 years of Jewish history (Aramaic, Yiddish, and Hebrew). For clarinet in A, B-flat and Bass Clarinet (one performer). This is a challenging piece, especially for the clarinet, first violin and the viola. (C2500)
