Two Famous Ave Marias for clarinet and piano by J.S. Bach/Charles Gounod and Franz Schubert arranged by David Marlatt. Eighthnote Publications, 2001, 7 + 2 pages. These two works are among the most popular music in the repertoire for solo voice and keyboard. The first Ave Maria was originally name Meditation by the composer, Charles Gounod. He wrote this famous melody to the accompaniment of the first prelude of the Well-Tempered Clavier by JS Bach. Franz Schubert based his Ave Maria and a text taken from the Lady of the Lake by Sir Walter Scott. Suitable for second year students. The Schubert, although at a slower tempo, is the more difficult of the two with more complex notation including many triplets and a few grace notes. (C2346)
